Mountains
Western North Carolina is defined by its mountains. Clouds frequently drift between the 4000 foot tall peeks, and each mountaintop yields spectacular views that stretch for miles and miles. The eastern continental divide runs through here (in fact, you’ll cross it each time you visit town from your home at Greycliff). This puts you in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountain Range, and on the border of the famed Smoky Mountains.
Land of Waterfalls
Rapidly flowing rivers rush along the many valley floors, and when the land drops away, as it frequently does, the river erupts into a waterfall. In these mountains, seeking out and exploring waterfalls is a popular passtime. Not far from Greycliff, the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway (the road between Highlands and Franklin) follows the course of the Cullasaja River, and offers up views of several breath-taking waterfalls such as Dry Falls, pictured above.
Autumn Blaze
The mountains here are not rocky crags; they are covered with trees. Each fall, as the leaves turn, the entire landscape is transformed into a rolling sea of fire. The photo above features the southwest view from the peak of Greycliff.
